A brief introduction to Indian Rummy
There are two versions of Indian Classic Rummy - 13 card rummy and 21 card rummy. In 13 Card Indian Rummy, each player is dealt 13 cards, whereas, in 21 Card Indian Rummy, each player gets 21 cards. 13 card rummy is more popular of the two versions because it is comparatively simpler and each round takes less time than 21 card rummy which is much more elaborate.
Indian rummy cards
Indian rummy is played between 2-6 people with two decks. Each deck has 52 cards. The cards are classified into four suits - Clubs, Spades, Diamonds, and Hearts. In each suit, there are 13 cards ranked - 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Ace, Jack, Queen, and King. They are evaluated at the number that is printed on them. Ace, Jack, Queen, and King each is assigned 10 points.
Jokers in Indian rummy
Each deck in Indian Classic Rummy contains two cards with the sign of Joker on them. They are called printed Jokers. There are also cut Jokers. Once all the players are dealt their cards, the rest of the cards are kept facing downwards. The card at the top of the stack is removed and placed facing up. This is the cut Joker. All the other cards of the same rank across all four suits also become cut Jokers.
Why are jokers so significant in online Indian rummy? They can take the place of any card that is missing when you form valid sets and sequences. Thus, these cards can facilitate victory.
Sets and Sequences in Indian rummy
To win a round of Indian rummy online, a player has to arrange all of his/her cards into valid sets and sequences. Three or more cards of the same value but from different suits form a set. For example, 3 of Hearts, 3 of Clubs, and 3 of Spades create a valid set. When you arrange three or more consecutively valued cards of the same suit, you form a valid sequence. 4 of Diamonds, 5 of Diamonds, and 6 of Diamonds will be an example of a valid sequence.
Your sequence can be either pure or impure. When you create a sequence with a Joker to take the place of the card you need to complete the sequence but it is not in your hand, then you form an impure sequence. When your sequence contains no Jokers, then it is a pure sequence.
Winning a round of Indian Classic Rummy
Both 13 Card and 21 Card Indian rummy have specific rules. A round of 13 card Indian rummy will end only when a player has arranged all the 13 cards into one pure sequence with a supported impure sequence and any number of sets and sequences necessary to match the remaining cards. The first person to do it wins.
In 21 card Indian classic rummy, you can win if you arrange your cards in any of the following ways:
- 1) 3 pure sequences (3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit without a Joker) and the remaining cards into any combination of sets and sequences
- 2) 8 Jokers in one group
- 3) 8 Dublees (a Dublee is a pair of 2 cards of the same rank and suit or two Jokers) in 8 different groups
- 4) 3 Tunnelas (a Tunnela is 3 cards of the same rank and suit) in 3 different groups
You can see that winning a game of 21 card Indian rummy requires a lot of focus, calculation, and patience. It is much more complicated too. That is why beginners start out with 13 card Indian rummy.
